NDIS Funding for Prosthetics and Orthotics
The National Disability Insurance Scheme provides support to Australian citizens, permanent residents, or Protected Special Category Visa holders under the age of 65 living in Australia who have a disability caused by a permanent impairment. If you are eligible, the scheme will provide funding towards supports considered reasonable and necessary to achieve your NDIS stated goals.
Northern Prosthetics is a registered NDIS provider and a majority of our clients are NDIS participants.
These are the steps involved in becoming a NDIS participant and getting funding for a prothesis or orthotic device.
1. Register with NDIS
Check your eligibility for NDIS and if eligible, complete the Access Request Form.
2. Arrange a planning meeting
Once you have registered, NDIS will contact you to arrange a planning meeting with your Local Area Coordinator (LAC).
3. Meet with your prosthetist/orthotist
If you want to include a prosthetic or orthosis as part of your NDIS plan, it’s a good idea to meet with your prosthetist/orthotist before you meet with your LAC to get advice on the devices available and funding required. The goals you set for yourself in your NDIS plan will determine the type of device NDIS may fund.
4. Develop your plan with your LAC
Meet with your NDIS Local Area Coordinator and develop a proposed plan that includes the funding required for your plan (usually a 12-month plan).
5. Get a functional assessment from your prosthetist/orthotist
Once you have an approved plan from NDIS, visit your prosthetist/orthotist for a functional assessment and quotation. This information will be submitted to the NDIS. At this point funding should be made available for consumables like liners to see you through until the device approval comes through.
6. NDIS approval
Once NDIS approval is received, the process of designing, manufacturing and fitting your prosthetic or orthotic device begins.
